Long rectangular faces in an oval stone are not something you see every day. Laura saw this design by the late Fred Van Sant and fell in love with it. The design gives the stone a very angular, almost art deco look. Australian garnets are not often found in larger sizes. Large rough is commonly chopped up to create smaller brighter stones. Garnet takes such a wonderful polish that in a larger stone it makes a feature of this uncommon reflection pattern and shows off the subtle red flashes.
It's safe to say the artist has a love of checkerboard cuts. The reflection pattern they give the gemstone is so very different and wonderfully eye catching. The design of this gem is called Fortitude by Arya Akhavan. Large pavilion faces flash the red colour up and out of the twinkling checkerboard crown. The play of red flash and mirrored polish is energetic.
